Woonsocket-based CVS says it will be setting up a new digital technology development center in neighboring Massachusetts to create new technologies to help consumers.

The pharmacy chain said the new facility will employ 100 people 90% of whom will be new recruits and the remaining number will transfer from Rhode Island.

Governor-elect Gina Raimondo said she was disappointed when she read the news.

“Obviously it wasn’t a happy thing to read; that’s what I need to do as governor, pick up the phone and call the CEO of CVS and all the companies in Rhode Island and say ‘what’s it going to take to get you to expand in Rhode Island?’” said Raimondo.

In a statement, a spokesperson from CVS said the new facility is intended to attract talent from the Boston tech sector as well as the health community, however the company says it will still be headquartered in Rhode Island and is actively recruiting talent to work in the Ocean State.

According to CVS the new technology center will help the stores connect with start-ups developing health related products and services.
