Deep Water Wind cleared a major hurdle Monday after the Bureau of Ocean Management granted the energy company a right-of-way grant to construct a power transmission line from the mainland to Block Island.

The grant is the next step in construct an offshore wind farm which would give Block Island access to cleaner energy; currently Block Island is not attached to the state’s energy grid.

“The first thing that it does is it cleans up our air locally,” said Deep Water CEO Jeff Grybowski.

“That’s something that affects all of us; it improves health outcomes for Rhode Islanders to have cleaner air.”

With the grant, Deep Water can now lay a submerged transmission line between the mainland and Block Island to provide both areas access to proposed 30-megawatt wind farm located to the southeast.

Grybowski said construction is slated to begin next summer.
