The Providence-based art-education nonprofit ¡CityArts! debuted a student designed mural on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to advocate for nonviolence in the wake of the recent police protests.

The project began during the organization’s fall semester when students age eleven through fourteen wanted to make something as a response to the grand jury decisions in Ferguson Missouri and Staten Island.

“Our students started a dialog in terms of what was happening in Ferguson, and talking about the violence in our world and we thought that a community mural made a lot of sense,” said Barbra Wong of ¡CityArts!

The mural includes drawings from the students and quotes from community leaders, politicians, and school children. The mural can be found at the corner of Broad and Gallatin Streets.

¡CityArts! focuses on providing access to art education to  at-risk kids in urban communities.
