Rhode Island State Police confirm to WPRO that an investigation is under way into possible voter fraud from a special primary election in Central Falls on February 5.

They say they were contacted by the Rhode Island Board of Elections but they have nothing else to add since the investigation is in its early stages.

The primary election was to see who will be on a special election ballot to replace former Ward 5 City Councilor Tammi Johnson who resigned in Janruary.

On Thursday, former state representative Kenneth Vaudreuil received 72 votes in the primary election. Former mayor Thomas Lazieh received 42 votes.

In a statement, Central Falls Mayor James Diossa said, “I believe the Board of Elections is performing their due diligence regarding any complaint that they received. I have full faith that they will uphold the integrity of our elections and my office is happy to help in any way.”

A call has been left with the Rhode Island Board of Elections.
