Governor Gina Raimondo announced Tuesday the Federal Emergency Management Agency has given the state an extension on applying for disaster relief for January’s historic blizzard.

“It’s taken us a little bit longer, we’ve been slightly distracted by the snow that never stops,” said Pete Gaynor, director of RI Emergency Management.

“Trying to get all the paperwork together to perform all the estimates and to actually validate the cost has just taken more time than the 30 days allows.”

Rhode Island needs to compile all the cost incurred by the snow from each city and town before applying for aid.

The new extension gives the state until March 27 to complete the disaster declaration.
