PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A special election will be held to choose a new state representative for parts of Narragansett and South Kingstown.

Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea announced Wednesday that the election for House District 33 will be held June 9.

District 33 Rep. Donald Lally Jr. announced on the House floor Tuesday that he was resigning to dedicate more time to his family and his law practice.

Candidates must declare their intention to run next week.

A special primary election will be held May 5 if more than one candidate from either party qualifies for the ballot.

Lally, a Democrat, was a member of the House leadership team as the speaker pro tempore.

Lally was first elected in 1989 and was second in seniority among current members.
