PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Rhode Island will receive nearly $174,000 in federal funding to provide housing to homeless veterans.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced Sunday that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program will provide 23 homeless veterans with permanent housing through the North Providence Housing Authority. The veterans will also receive services through the Providence VA Medical Center.

Reed is a member of the Appropriations Committee and the ranking member of the panel’s subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, which oversees the program’s funding.

Reed says the program offers a comprehensive approach to helping veterans find permanent housing and get the medical services they need.

Reed helped secure $75 million for program vouchers in fiscal year 2015 to assist homeless veterans nationwide.
