Farmhands at URI’s Peckham Farm were surprised when a newborn baby donkey was discovered over the weekend.

According to a release, a student arrived early Sunday morning to feed the animals when he saw a new-born donkey taking its first steps. The birth was shocking as the farm only has two donkeys; both female.

The school believe the new mother, Jenny, must have been pregnant when the acquired her last May; the gestation period for a donkey is roughly one year.

Students say Jenny has been an excellent mother to the unnamed foal.

URI uses donkeys to guard against coyotes and feral dogs.
