Self-declared Presidential Candidate Lincoln Chafee has his work cut out for him in Iowa. A recent survey by Public Policy Polling shows Hillary Clinton leads among likely Democratic voters in Iowa by 62 percent, while Chafee trails the pack with just 2 percent.

Chafee also does not perform well as a second choice for voters, only getting 4 percent of likely voters.

The former governor’s problem seems to stem from a lack of recognition; when asked about Chafee’s favorability, only 25 percent of those polled cast their opinion, while 75 percent were unsure. The problem of name recognition looks to be a common one among the candidates, as only Clinton and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren had a favorability rating over 50 percent.

While the lack of notability may be an obstacle for Chafee, it does come with a silver lining; it allows him to concentrate on his Senate record rather than his four years as governor.

With the Iowa Caucasus tentatively set for February 2016, Chafee has 10 months to capitalize on the blank slate in the Buckeye State. A strategy the former governor already seems to be engaging in given his repeated attacks on then-Senator Clinton’s vote for the Iraq war.

In an interview with WPRO News in early April, Chafee said he feels he is more popular outside of Rhode Island; the next 10 months will prove him either true or false.
