A new bill before the Rhode Island Senate would make the American Burying Beetle the state’s official insect.

The legislation was proposed by Senator Susan Sosnowski, D-South Kingstown, after third graders from St. Michael’s Country Day School in Newport nominated the bug when they learned Rhode Island was one of the few states with no official insect.

While found in Rhode Island, the beetle in on the endangered species list and repopulation efforts are underway at Roger Williams Park Zoo.
