Mayor Jorge Elorza announced late Monday afternoon his administration will extend medical coverage to include transition-related healthcare coverage to city workers who identify as transgendered.

The new plan would cover gender reassignment surgery, hormone therapy, and reconstruction surgeries, according to a statement from Elorza’s office.

“My administration is committed to creating a City Hall that is inclusive and welcoming for all employees and residents, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression,” said Elorza.

The Mayor also says he will be designating gender-neutral bathrooms in select city buildings.

Elorza also announced Deputy Chief of Staff Marisa O’Gara will be tasked with acting as the city’s LGBTQ liaison.
