Rhode Island’s Public Utilities Commission is expected to vote Wednesday on whether or not to eliminate a controversial “billing adjustment” to customers who chose to switch energy providers.

As previously reported by WPRO’s Jim Hummel, customers who switch from National Grid to another energy provider were hit up with a standard billing fee to make up for the cost of delivering energy to the state.

Some customers expressed vehement disapproval to the PUC saying had they known about the fee, they would not have made the switch.

Lieutenant Governor Dan McKee had previously testified before the PUC, saying billing adjustments to the tune of hundreds or thousands of dollars is a “barrier” to a competitive energy market.

Massachusetts and New Hampshire recently dropped similar billing adjustments.

The meeting will be held at 1:00p.m. at the Commission headquarters on 89 Jefferson Boulevard in Warwick.
