Providence Police deployed a SWAT unit off of Westminster Street in an attempt to catch a known gang member who was seen in the area.

Police cordoned off an apartment complex on Westminster and Harkness Streets to try and keep Dwayne Gibson, 20, from escaping. While he managed to get away, after a search of the apartment, police were able to arrest an associate – Fabio Martinez – and seize a .45 caliber handgun.

image1A warrant was issued for Gibson’s arrest after two guns were seized in a vehicle stop June 28 that lead to a high speed chase. Gibson also managed to get away then, but another suspect was also arrested.

Police Colonel Hugh Clements said officers were being cautious by shutting down the street and searching for Gibson apartment by apartment.

“We knew from the beginning he had a pretty good gap in time to escape through the back door,” said Clements “So he’s in the wind still, he’s at large, [and] he is wanted by the Providence Police.”
