PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A report by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development says homelessness fell 13.3 percent in Rhode Island since 2010.

The Providence Journal reports that about half the drop — 6.6 percent — was between 2014 and 2015.

HUD’s 2015 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress found that the number of homeless Americans fell 11 percent in the past five years. The number of people living on the streets has fallen 26 percent.

Communities in Rhode Island reported 1,111 people were homeless in January 2015.

Homelessness among veterans fell by 13 percent between 2011 and 2015, while chronic homelessness rose 27.9 percent since 2010.

The results of the report are based on HUD’s “point-in-time” estimates, which measures the scope of homelessness on a single night in January each year.
