truck tolls senate vote

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Senate has approved a bill that would impose a toll on big-rig trucks traveling highways through the state.

State senators voted 25-12 after a three-hour debate Thursday to approve the highway truck tolls that would help finance a 10-year plan to repair deteriorating bridges.

The House of Representatives voted 52-21 to pass the bill late Wednesday night after nearly seven hours of debate.

Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo says she hopes to sign the bill soon.

The Senate also approved the House’s version of the bill Thursday. The House must now approve the Senate’s bill before it goes to the governor. That process is also scheduled for Thursday.
