A small jet plane overshot the runway at North Central State Airport in Smithfield at about 10:30 Thursday morning.  There were no injuries among the two pilots and four passengers on board, according to State Aeronautics Inspector Jim Warcup.

He said the four passengers were still able to make it to their business meeting in Providence. The privately owned Cessna Citation jet was bringing them from the Allegheny County, Pennsylvania airport outside Pittsburgh.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Board are investigating.

Warcup said the jet wound up about 250 feet off the end of the runway, and sustained substantial damage. The owner’s insurance company would decide how to salvage the craft.

The airport remains open, although ‘runway five’ is closed, probably for the rest of the day.
