US Senator Jack Reed and Congressman David Cicilline reacted Thursday to Donald Trump’s comments during Wednesday night’s debate as to whether or not he would accept the outcome of November’s election and concede if he lost.

“I will tell you at the time,” said Trump to moderator Chris Wallace. “I’ll keep you in suspense, okay?”

Senator Reed told WPRO’s Steve Klamkin that “it was very disturbing to hear a candidate for president suggest that he might not abide by the view of the American people.”

“If this is carried to the point where elections are no longer decisive, it will really hurt the democratic process,” Reed continued. “Governor Romney was incredibly graceful in the last election, wishing President Obama good luck and the American people good fortune, that’s what you do.”

Congressman Cicilline told WPRO that “like most Americans, I found that statement very disturbing. We have a long history in this great democracy of elections that are hotly contested and vigorously robust with the understanding at the end, when a winner is declared, everyone accepts that election and that person becomes president for the entire country.”

“To hear a party nominee of one of the major political parties not say absolutely that he would accept the results and the decisions of the people of the United States is very disturbing,” Cicilline concluded. “Frankly, it’s one more reason that disqualifies Mr. Trump from being President of the United States.”
