PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Embattled Providence City Councilman Kevin Jackson is suing in an effort to block a group of constituents who are seeking his ouster through a recall election.

Longtime Ward 3 councilman Kevin Jackson filed the civil suit against the city of Providence and two members of its Board of Canvassers on Thursday.

Jackson is requesting that the court step in to halt the recall efforts spearheaded by Patricia Kammerer.

The lawsuit claims there are “significant defects” within some of the official paperwork for the recall.

Kammerer says Jackson should welcome the recall if he actually believes he has the support of his constituents.

The 58-year-old Democrat was indicted in July on charges that he embezzled more than $125,000 from the Providence Cobras youth track-and-field team.

He pleaded not guilty in August.
