CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — A Cranston police captain who is suing city officials and several members of the department for sexual harassment and gender discrimination has expanded her lawsuit to include more allegations.

The Providence Journal reports Capt. Karen Guilbeault’s lawsuit now claims that a 2013-2014 investigation violated her First Amendment rights under the Constitution.

Guilbeault alleges police officials initiated an improper investigation of her after she recorded a conversation with a superior officer. One of her lawyers says Guilbeault had recorded the conversation to protect herself against harassment and discrimination.

A judge recently ruled that Guilbeault can expand the list of defendants and claims in the lawsuit.

A lawyer for the city, the mayor and other defendants says the decision doesn’t change their position that there’s “no merit” to Guilbeault’s claims.
