EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island residents gathered at a city council meeting to protest a politician’s offensive tweet about the nation-wide women’s marches this past weekend.

More than 200 people convened on the East Greenwich Town Council meeting to speak out about Town Council Vice President Sean Todd’s tweet on Monday. Todd wrote that men came up with the idea for the marches to get their wives to leave the house on Saturday.

Todd has since deleted the tweet and issued an apology on Twitter.

Participants in the protest directly addressed the councilman asking him to resign or offer a better apology. One lone person defended Todd.

Tara Granahan spoke to organizer Hilary Levey Friedman following the protest.
