Governor signs into law women’s health care bills

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) – Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo has signed into law three bills dealing with women’s health care issues.

The Democratic governor on Thursday also called on state lawmakers to pass legislation codifying the landmark Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade’s abortion protections into Rhode Island law.

She says women’s right to seek an abortion is threatened as President Donald Trump has nominated conservative federal appeals court judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

The bills Raimondo signed Thursday require health insurers to provide a full year of access to contraceptive care, improve access to mastectomies and allow pregnant minors to access prenatal care without parental consent.

Raimondo signed the bills at Kent County Hospital in Warwick, where she was flanked by women’s health advocates, medical professionals and state lawmakers.
