Rhode Island nurses authorize strike starting Monday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Unionized nurses and some other workers at two major Rhode Island hospitals have voted to strike.

The nurses at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital, both in Providence, voted Thursday to start their strike at 3 p.m. Monday.

The roughly 2.400 hospital workers are represented by United Nurses & Allied Professionals Local 5098.

The union did not release the results of Thursday’s strike vote but said members voted “overwhelmingly” to strike. The union rejected a three-year contract offer from hospital parent company Lifespan earlier this month.

Lifespan in a statement Thursday called the strike vote “disappointing” and said it will continue normal inpatient and outpatient services by hiring temporary nurses and technical professionals for the week.
