PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The state Department of Transportation says it’s looking for a solution after the closure of a well-traveled highway exit caused traffic jams for Rhode Island and Massachusetts commuters heading into Providence.

The DOT closed the off-ramp for Exit 3, which leads to Gano Street, on Interstate 195 West in Providence to repair the Washington Bridge Sunday. It plans to keep it closed through the fall of 2019.

The Providence Journal reports the closure backed up traffic Monday to the state line near Seekonk, Massachusetts.

David Fish, an administrative project manager, says they’ll make adjustments if they can to improve traffic.

The bridge carries I-195 West from East Providence to Providence.

The DOT says traffic heading to Gano Street and the east side of Providence should use Exit 2.
