Man fatally shot in Providence an ‘innocent victim’

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Police say the 19-year-old man shot and killed in a Providence parking lot over the weekend was not the intended target.

Providence police on Monday identified the victim of the shooting at about 1 a.m. Saturday as Zachary Medina, of Newport.

Maj. David Lapatin says Medina was in town to visit his grandmother and was an “innocent victim.”

Another victim, 26-year-old Darius Page, of Providence, was injured and taken to the hospital. Both men were walking to a car when a masked man ran into the parking lot and opened fire.

Police say other people were around and the intended target remains unclear.

Medina’s death was the city’s ninth homicide of the year. No arrests were announced.
