Providence City Council postpones Fane Tower vote

After two members didn’t show, the Providence City Council moved to postpone its vote on whether to override Mayor Jorge Elorza’s veto of a zoning change for the proposed Fane Tower.

A spokesperson confirmed that one of the absent members, Councilman Wilbur Jennings, was sick. Councilman Seth Yurdin was also not in attendance for the special meeting.

Nine members voted for the postponement, which Council President David Salvatore opposed.

“When a majority of a legislative body comes together to take a formal vote on a matter that’s on a printed docket and then refuses to take that vote, it sends a negative message to, again, the general public that the City Council didn’t want to do their job tonight,” he said.

Salvatore said he would have voted to uphold Elorza’s veto, saying he is opposed to the project as it currently stands and still has too many unanswered questions. The vote is now scheduled for Thursday night.
