A man was in custody after walking in to police headquarters late Tuesday morning to say that he stabbed his girlfriend to death in an apartment in the Elmhurst neighborhood, apparently the second homicide of 2019 in the capital city.

“So, we had a suspect who walked into the station, he walked up to a clerk. He advised her that he had stabbed his girlfriend,” said Major David Lapatin, the Providence Police detective commander.

He gave an address at 198 Valley Ave., where police found the victim, a woman in her 30’S inside a first-floor apartment, Lapatin said.

The man was arrested at the central station, and was undergoing questioning as the Rhode Island Medical Examiner’s Office removed the body.

“It is tragic,” said Maj. Lapatin. “Right now we have to make sure we preserve all the evidence, and talk to witnesses and talk to the suspect.”
