Boy praised for actions during fire at children’s hospital

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A young boy is being praised for helping to alert firefighters to a fire at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Hospital spokesman David Levesque says the elementary-school age boy was visiting his sibling at the hospital in Providence when the fire broke out shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday. Nobody was injured.

The boy saw the fire and told his mother, who alerted staff.

Levesque says Providence firefighters received about a dozen calls.

Hasbro is part of the Lifespan Health System. Lifespan President Tim Babineau called the boy a “hero.”

Levesque said Wednesday that the cause is still under investigation. He says the fire was contained to the roof and no evacuations had to be made.

Workers had been on the roof earlier in the day.
