PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The acting director of Rhode Island’s 911 emergency call center has been relieved of duty because his certification to teach life-saving techniques had expired.

State police say Gregory Scungio continued to train telecommunicators in first aid, CPR and automated external defibrillator use even after his instructor certification expired in February 2016.

Scungio has been reassigned to another position in the call center. Lt. Michael McGlynn will serve as acting director.

State Police Superintendent James Manni says employees trained by Scungio since his certification expired do not have valid certifications.

He says 32 telecommunicators and eight managers will be properly certified by next Wednesday.

Manni says nurses have been hired in case callers need CPR instruction in the meantime.
