Police recovered more than 170 suspected stolen tires after the fire department in East Providence responded to an alarm at a garage on Broadway.

Police Chief William Nebus estimated the tires, 43 sets of four totaling 172 tires, many with rims, were worth about $80,000. He displayed the tires Monday in a lot behind the police station.

He said the tires, discovered when the fire department responded to an alarm at about 5:00 A.M. Sunday, are often taken by thieves from places close to highways.

“Locally, they’ve been going to car lots, rental unit lots, hotels. Anyplace that’s highway-accessible and easy to get to, where they can get in and get out and not be noticed,.” Nebus said.

“It seems Honda was a hot model. There are some (Cadillac) Escalades, I saw some BMW and Toyota. I don’t know how they’re working it or why they’re taking this particular models, maybe they have an order list, a check list that people are requesting, I don’t know.”

“We’re looking for their owners at this time,” Nebus said, urging people missing tires to call the East Providence Police at 401-435-7600.
