PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Legislative sponsors behind a new report on Rhode Island gun crimes, including Representative Stephen Casey (D-Woonsocket) say they are disappointed it does not dig deeper.

The report put out by the attorney general’s office includes the number of new gun crimes charged each year and the number that resulted in a jail sentence as opposed to a suspended or deferred sentence or probation.

Casey joined WPRO’s Matt Allen on Tuesday to discuss some of his concerns about the report. LISTEN BELOW:

There were 346 new gun-crime cases filed in Rhode Island last year.

The Providence Journal reports that sponsors behind the report on both sides of the gun debate wanted more specifics.

They say initial charges and the ultimate crime pleaded to, or that a defendant is convicted, should be added in the future.

Others wanted more detail on the kinds of crimes being committed, by whom and the type of gun used.
