"St. Pierre's Show Prep | Chafee to Rhode Islanders: Smile through your Fear and Sorrow"
Seeking “Fairness”
Governor Linc Chafee wants all his state agency directors to get raises anytime the state’s unionized employees get a negotiated raise. Chafee, whose agency directors currently squeak by on salaries ranging from $94,769 to $156,876, cites “fairness” for his decision.
Current law allows a governor to seek raises for his Cabinet in March of each year, but
also requires he air the raises at a hearing open to public comment.

Chafee’s proposed budget includes upwards of $87.7 million in tax and fee hikes, pledging a major slice of that cake to Lil Rhody’s cash-starved cities and towns for their schools.
Let’s take a deep breath now and rattle off the conga line of new taxes and tax increases the governor is seeking:

The State of the State is (BLANK)
It would be almost funny if Gene Rayburn was delivering tonight’s STATE OF THE STATE address. Unfortunately, this will be no laughing matter and Brett Somers Klugman and Charles Nelson Reilly left the building long ago.
Tonight Governor Linc Chafee will no doubt meet a sea of tepid applause as he delivers a one two punch of maudlin news, the State of the State and his fiscal budget. Among the notables:

"St. Pierre's Show Prep | Jessica, You Won...Enough...Go Do Your Homework!"
Go Do Your Homework
Wake me when Jessica Ahlquists’s 15 minutes is mercifully up. The Cranston high school junior who successfully sued to have the “Our Heavenly Father” banner removed from the auditorium wall at Cranston West has been absent from school for a week or so and that started rumors swirling she was transferring elsewhere. There was even a rumor she was going to LaSalle which, of course, would be the ultimate irony.
Ahlquist squashed all rumors saying she intends to “walk across the stage on my graduation day in 2013 with a Cranston West diploma in my hand.”

I hope you’re wrong in this case, George. According to a Stern News magazine poll, one
in five young Germans has no idea that Auschwitz was a Nazi death camp. Although 90% of those asked DID know it was a concentration camp, the poll shows Auschwitz meant NOTHING to 21% of 18-29 year olds.

"St. Pierre Show Prep | Not Just Your Average Joe"
Not Just Your Average Joe
Longtime Rhode Island Governor J. Joseph Garrahy passed away today at age 81. Garrahy
was governor from 1977-1985. He was Lt. Governor from 1969-1977. I was just breaking into the business when he was in his first term as governor spinning the hits on 1,000 watt daytime powerhouse WNRI in Woonsocket. By the time the Blizzard of ’78 hit Lil’ Rhody, I had gotten my first job in the Providence market doing afternoon drive news on “The Country Giant” WHIM and overnights on beautiful music sister station “94 JOY” plus working as a floor cameraman for the 6 and 11p.m .weekend newscasts on ch 10. The blizzard hit and I was stuck at those two radio stations with just one other on air person and we broadcast for 32 straight hours before relief arrived. I was still living at home at the time and walked from the East Providence studios to Pawtucket.

"St. Pierre's Show Prep | Tim Thomas Biffs Obama's Party. Great Save or Five Hole?"
Thomas Ices Obama The 2011 Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins were at the White House yesterday for the traditional East Room celebration with the president, but the face of the team, MVP Tim Thomas skipped the event. Thomas cited politics as the reason. posted by

Thomas issued a written statement saying “I believe the federal government has grown out of control, threatening the rights, the liberties and property of the people.” Thomas, who reportedly made a contribution to the Tea Party effort ahead of the 2010 election, claimed his decision, quote, “was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country.” Bruins president Cam Neely did some nifty back hoeing saying the team was disappointed by Thomas’ decision and his views don’t reflect those of the B’s organization. Obama kept to his script, praising playoff MVP Thomas for his stellar post season play.

"St. Pierre's Show Prep | The Cranston School Committee Must Ask "Oh Heavenly Father, Now What?""
Our Heavenly Father….Now What?
I think it’s time the Cranston School Committee ask itself “What would the Heavenly Father Do?” as the dust clears over Judge Ronald Legauex’ ruling that the prayer banner
adorning the auditorium wall at Cranston High West since 1960 has gotta go. Judge Legauex ordered the immediate removal of the eight foot high banner saying it violates the First Amendment.
Phone reaction to the ruling on our show Thursday was mixed with callers acknowledging Legauex’ decision was a no brainer. With that said, most callers still expressed anger towards the student who filed the lawsuit, self professed atheist Jessica Ahlquist. Most callers regarded Ahlquist and her father as opportunists looking for their fifteen minutes in the spotlight.

Oh, Heavenly Father….You Never Stood A Chance
Back in 1959, Cranston West seventh grader David Bradley was asked to author a prayer to be recited in place of the Lord’s prayer by all classes to start the day. Students recited the prayer daily until 1962. That’s when the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed all prayer in public schools. The kids stopped their daily vocal ritual, but the words were
mounted on a mural and have remained a focal point in the school auditorium ever since.
Enter 11th grader and self proclaimed atheist Jessica Ahlquist. Ahlquist’s dad, Mark, filed a complaint on her behalf that the words on the eight foot high banner violated the establishment clause of the First Amendment. He asked it be taken down immediately.

District One Game Changer
John Loughlin’s decision to end his 2012 campaign dramatically changes the upcoming chess game in the race for the First Congressional seat. Loughlin came surprisingly close to
beating David Cicilline two years ago and many pundits thought if he had a little more time and a lot more dough he would have won. Loughlin would have faced Brendan Doherty in a GOP primary.
Loughlin’s press release says “it has become abundantly clear to me that the best way for the Rhode Island Republicans to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory is to conduct a long and divisive primary election in RI-01.”

"St. Pierre's Show Prep | Playing Dirty in New Hampshire"
What’s In A Few Words?
Mitt Romney’s the big favorite to win today’s New Hampshire primary, in the first binding voting of the 2012 presidential primary election season. Romney squeaked past Rick Santorum by eight votes in last week’s Iowa caucus. How big Romney’s win in New
Hampshire will shape the upcoming key primaries in South Carolina and Florida. The other candidates will be battling for second place in New Hampshire after unloading a week’s worth of negativity at Romney designed to slow down his Granite state momentum, or as Buddy likes to say, “put gum on his shoe.” The most recent attempt was taking an audio/video clip out of context during yesterday’s last full day of campaigning before the vote.

"St. Pierre's Show Prep | Satisfying Results"
Personal Best
Ran the Disneyworld half marathon in a personal best time of 2:10:50 which is just about a ten minute mile pace. 27,000 runners signed up for the race, 22,421 finished (you must maintain a 16-minute mile pace or you’re picked up by a van….how degrading!) Of 10,099 men who finished, I was 3,546th and in the top 55% of my age group. I’ll take it!
Next year’s goal is to finish in less than two hours. It’s VERY difficult to navigate the course and pass runners with a field so large.

"St.Pierre's Show Prep | Running Off at the Mouse"
GREETINGS FROM THE MOUSE
I arrived at Walt Disney World Thursday morning for Saturday's half marathon and headed to Wide World of Sports to pick up my race packet. The forecast for Saturday morning's run (and we're talking MORNING here) couldn't be better, 40's at the start, 50's at the finish, and clear. A far cry from my 2010 run when it was 18 degrees with freezing rain throughout. Frozen OJ is nice, but not right off the trees.
