Bishop Tobin of the Roman Catholic Diocese in Providence criticized Governor Lincoln Chafee for his hasty lighting of the State House ‘holiday tree’ on Thursday afternoon.
On Friday, Tobin told the WPRO Morning News with Tara Granahan and Andrew Gobeil that Governor Chafee is not being mindful of the feelings of the majority for "whom the Christmas tree is a Christmas tree and that name has meant something to people for a long time. He said that he believes Chafee is leading people done the wrong path. He said Chafee is right that the world is changing but said it is not "necessarily a good thing," noting the world is becoming less moral. He did commend Chafee for being faithful to his convictions.
Later on the John DePetro Show Tobin likened Chafee to the Wizard of Oz claiming the Governor is "trying to take his own view and impose it on others."
Tobin said that he will be joining Fr. James Ruggieri at St. Patrick’s Parish in Providence for a Christmas tree lighting on December 19 at 6:00 p.m.
Governor Chafee has consistently maintained that he is just following the tradition of past governor’s by calling the tree a ‘Holiday’ tree. He appeared on the O'Reilly Factor Thursday evening to reiterate the point.
