Mike Vecchione has become a household name from the New York City club scene and TV spots nationwide. His cool on-stage demeanor and perfectly timed delivery has him quickly rising thru the ranks and becoming the next "It" guy in comedy. He's a guy we can all relate to and is a favorite amongst the NYC heavyweight comics.
See him at Catch a rising Star at Twin River Friday & Saturday, January 25-26 (3 shows total).
Our Comedy Contributor Ben Hague caught up with Mike before his shows this weekend.
Ben Hague: How did you get into comedy?
Mike Vecchione: I was teaching in Philadelphia finishing my master's and wanted to try it. I never thought I would be funny enough to make a living (I bombed for a few years) but thought it could help with public speaking or whatever. I thought something productive would come of it. Today, I am a working comic with sleep issues and a drug problem... So... You CAN achieve your dreams...
BH: When did you realize you were funny?
MV: I realized I was funny when I knew I could write a joke early on. I had been a decent writer in high school and college, and as a teacher, you have to be funny or the kids will throw things at you.
BH: What was your "Oh $h*!" I'm an NYC comedian moment?
MV: I was hosting at the Boston Comedy Club on a Monday in February, dead of winter, and it was snowing. I was performing for four people. Then Chappelle walked in and went on. The club filled within minutes of him hitting the stage and he performed for a few hours.
BH: Who were your influences growing up?
MV: My father and mother. Comedically growing up: Richard Jeni, Dom Irrerra. Today: Dave Attell, Bill Burr, Patrice ONeal, Chris Rock, Chappelle...
BH: What would be your dream gig?
MV: Having my own hit show and being able to perform to theater-sized audiences across the world... who are there to see me.
BH: What's your fav current YouTube video?
MV: Failed Marriage Proposals. It shows guys with such confidence, and then you watch that confidence immediately evaporate when she runs away crying and yelling "NO!"
