Ambassador Dennis Ross spoke Tuesday at the Naval War College in Newport. He spoke on “U.S. national security interests and the evolving Middle East security environment.”

The former special assistant to President Barack Obama and the National Security Council senior director for the Central Region, which includes the Middle East, Ross spoke to students, faculty and staff of the Naval War College. The address was not opened to the press or public.

A Middle East expert who helped negotiate several agreements there, Ross served in the State Department under President George H.W. Bush, was a Special Middle East Coordinator under President Bill Clinton, and as a Special Adviser to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

He currently is the William Davidson Distinguished Fellow and counselor at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

Two weeks ago, Ross expressed pessimism about the current state of relations between the principals in the Middle East.

“The atmosphere between Israelis and Palestinians is as sour as I’ve ever seen it,” Ross told Bloomberg News. “There’s a deep sense of hopelessness right now.”
