After several years of fundraising, ground will break on a permanent memorial at the site of the tragic Station Nightclub Fire. The announcement was made during 12th anniversary remembrance ceremony at Warwick City Hall.

The vacant plot of land on Cowesett Avenue in West Warwick has been bare after makeshift memorials were taken down. Gina Russo, a survivor and President of the Station Fire Memorial Foundation, says construction will begin this spring.

“We don’t have an official date, we are going with the end of spring beginning of summer it all depends on the ground when it thaws out,” said Russo.

The foundation has been able to raise $500,000 with the help of a professional fundraiser. Their ultimate goal is to raise $2 million in order to cover the costs of maintenance.

Reverend Don Anderson of the Rhode Island Coalition of Churches says he is glad the project will soon be underway.

“We need to see that place be what it is: a memorial; that is sacred ground and we need to honor that sacred ground,” said Anderson.
