Governor Gina Raimondo says she is pleased members of the retirees coalition chose voted for a settlement in the ongoing pension lawsuit.

“I think it’s a good deal for the retirees and it’s going to put Rhode Island on a good, long-term financial footing,” said Raimondo.

The deal passed with 1,168 pensioners voting yes, and 332 members voting no. The numbers were never officially disclosed to the media.

Raimondo says there is still a long way to go in the pension fight, but that she is hopeful.

“[Reform] is the right thing for the state of Rhode Island, it secures people’s pensions, it secures Rhode Island’s financial future; so I’ve got my fingers crossed.”

This is the first agreed-upon settlement since the police unions rejected a deal in early 2014.
