A woman was arrested by Middletown Police Tuesday morning after she allegedly murdered a woman in an apartment they shared on Jean Street.

Melissa Sue Anne Castle, 33, was taken into custody Tuesday morning after she told officers she had been involved in a violent argument with the victim Rachel Kilroy, 34. Police Chief Anthony Pesare says Castle met officers at the apartment when they arrived.

“She was cooperative […] but she was obviously, visibly shaken and upset when our officers arrived,” said Pesare.

Officers found the victim on the 2nd floor of her apartment dead from what appeared to be strangulation.

Pesare said the two women were in a romantic relationship and that Castle was known to Middletown police and other departments; however he said as far as he knew she did not have a violent history.

“Far too often we respond to incidents of domestic violence; it’s a epidemic that needs to be addressed, not by police departments but society as a whole,” said Pesare.

The cause of death is yet to be determined.

Castle was ordered held without bail; no plea was entered.

She is being held as a violator on a previous court charge.
