NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — An international sailing championship will be making a stop in Newport next year.

Sail Newport announced Thursday that the city will be one of five stops on the World Match Racing Tour in 2016.

The Newport Daily News reports the event will take place off Fort Adams State Park May 31-June 4 on a course that runs close to the shoreline in a virtual stadium.

Sailors will be racing in 32-foot-long, high-speed catamarans in Denmark, Australia and elsewhere around the world. Newport will be the last stop.

Brad Read, executive director of Sail Newport, says event organizers are increasingly setting their sights on Newport and Rhode Island after the success of the Volvo Ocean Race. The round-the-world race was hosted in May by Newport.
