COVENTRY- Construction will being in 2020 for the Ohio Replacement Ballistic Submarines and students who complete a new marine industry training program will be among the 1,600 Electric Boat plans to hire for the subs development.

Electric Boat’s Maura Dunn, Governor Raimondo and education leaders announced the program at Coventry High School on Thursday, which is one of six public and private schools to offer the program this coming fall.

“We are committed to helping our students build the skills that matter to pursue the careers that pay,” Raimondo said. “This initiative will lead students directly into careers in welding and electrical services, which will prepare them for jobs in ship-fitting and advanced marine manufacturing. Rhode Island businesses – now and in the future – need a talent pool of highly-skilled graduates ready to step into challenging careers.”

The initiative will bring ship-fitting, machining, and manufacturing programs to schools including Chariho, Coventry, Cranston, and Warwick school districts, the Providence Career and Technical Academy, and the William Davies Jr. Career and Technical High School, for a total enrollment over the next two years of roughly 180 students.

Electric Boat will be providing resources, training for educators and paid onsite internships for the students. A $370,000 grant is paying for the program.

In October 2015, Coventry Republican Rep. Sherry Roberts unveiled a very similar partnership and program with Electric Boat and Coventry and West Greenwich Schools.
