TIVERTON, R.I. (AP) – Rhode Island voters have approved a plan to build a new casino in Tiverton, on the Massachusetts border.
The measure allows casino operator Twin River to transfer its license for Newport Grand to a new casino in Tiverton.
The plan, Ballot Question 1, passed statewide on Tuesday after it received bipartisan support from political leaders and labor unions.
A campaign of around $3 million in favor of it was the state’s most expensive political race this season.
Voters in Tiverton also approved a companion question locally. The town will receive at least $3 million a year from the project.
Some Tiverton residents raised concerns about gambling and the casino’s long-term viability.
Gambling is Rhode Island’s third-biggest source of revenue.
