PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island will serve as a pallbearer at memorial services for late Arizona Sen. John McCain.

McCain’s family announced Monday that Whitehouse will be one of 15 pallbearers during Saturday’s memorial at Washington National Cathedral.

Whitehouse called the honor a “treasured gift.”

Even though McCain was a Republican and Whitehouse is a Democrat, the men had forged a close friendship based on mutual admiration despite their political differences.

McCain, the former Vietnam prisoner of war and six-term senator died from brain cancer Saturday. He will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Building on Friday and will be buried at the U.S. Naval Academy on Sunday in a private service.
