4 candidates in Rhode Island primary seek recounts

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Four candidates have requested recounts following Rhode Island’s primary elections.

The Providence Journal reports David O’Connell, State Sen. Paul Jabour, Rep. Ramon Perez and Oscar Vargas all asked the state Board of Elections to review Wednesday’s election results.

Unofficial results show O’Connell lost to Jose Serodio for state representative by 12 votes. O’Connell says he believes the issue is due to provisional ballots, which are ballots completed by voters whose eligibility is under question.

According to unofficial results, Jabour lost his race by 172 votes and Perez lost by 74 votes.

Vargas challenged Providence City Councilwoman Sabina Matos for her seat, and he lost by 294 votes according to unofficial results.
