Fire department warns of phone scammers posing as retirees

TIVERTON, R.I. (AP) – A Rhode Island fire department says phone scammers are posing as representatives collecting money for retirees.

WPRI-TV reports the Tiverton Fire Department has received complaints about people raising money for the department’s retirees. Officials say they aren’t collecting donations through the phone. The department says Local 1703 IAFF, the local firefighters union, isn’t fundraising through calls either.

Tiverton Fire Chief Robert Lloyd says residents shouldn’t engage over the phone because callers are scammers.

Residents can report suspicious phone calls to Tiverton police or the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Division.
